Message to the Rovers, in Roverway
Dear Scouts, the reason we are writing to you is that we won’t be present in Roverway. The camp’s organizers, and more specifically AGESCI (the Catholic Scouts Association) has canceled the workshop we had planned (title). Without this letter, you would not even be informed of the puzzling censorship that is taking place.
Many of you of course have gay and lesbian friends: you listen to them and love them for who they are, as friends do, around a fire in the evening or when you walk with a rucksack on your shoulders. Some of you may think that this topic does not concern you, but as you will see if you read on, that is not the case.
One in ten people is gay or lesbian. So there’s bound to be a gay or a lesbian person in your group. Perhaps you collected wood together last night, or it might be the person with whom you shared part of your trip, or it may be your leader and you never thought of it before... perhaps he or she is waiting for the right moment to tell you and they might be wondering whether or not you will still be their friend after they tell you.
What has happened, with our invitation to the camp being withdrawn just a few days before the opening ceremony, shows that homophobia (i.e. the fear and rejection of homosexuals) is still very widespread, and thrives on silence and ignorance. Without your intervention, gay and lesbian scouts will not be able to enjoy Roverway, because the organizers did not choose to “dare and share” but rather preferred to withdraw and to marginalize those who are willing to represent an alternative choice and a different life experience.
Before everything is silenced, we would like not only to let you know that happy gay and lesbian people do exist, but also that they are much happier when the people around them are willing to help them fight discrimination and all the interdictions related to it. You are on a learning journey and no one should have the right to tell you that you should love or feel for someone within a pre-determined schema.
Training should bring up the best abilities of everyone. And the desire and love for a person of the same sex is a gift that we cannot give up and we are not willing to waive.
You should not give up either! If you believe that human respect is not just an abstract feeling and that it can become a tangible choice and a brave action say something to stop discrimination against gay and lesbian people.
Before concluding, we would like to suggest a little sign of disobedience. At the bottom of this message you will find a logo that simply states: Roverway 2006, stop homophobia. Print it and stick it on your t-shirt, on your rucksack, on your neckies, hoist it next to your tents: repeat to those who don’t want to listen that, as far as you are concerned, gay and lesbian people are also welcome in a scout group.
Have a great journey, and let’s hope good luck is on our side.
Katia Acquafredda – Leader of the workshop
Piera Zani - Staff of the workshop
Patrizia Colosio – Chair of the Association Lista Lesbica Italiana
